Description
Job Summary
The Fiber Technician is responsible for the end-to-end installation, splicing, testing, commissioning, and maintenance of fiber optic and structured data cabling systems within telecom and utility environments.
The role serves as the primary on-site technical resource for all fiber-related activities, ensuring high-quality workmanship, compliance with TAQA/utility standards, and coordination with HSE Officers.
Key Responsibilities
Perform fiber optic cable laying, routing, dressing, and termination.
Conduct OTDR testing, power meter testing, and end-to-end link validation; analyze and interpret test results.
Execute cable termination and splicing of various types of fiber cables.
Install and terminate Cat6/Cat6A structured cabling systems including patch panels and RJ45 connectors.
Assemble, install, and terminate fiber patch panels, ODF/FODF, racks, and telecom cabinets.
Perform labeling, tagging, documentation updates, and as-built markups as per project standards.
Support telecom equipment installation including routers, switches, optical amplifiers, and related accessories (physical level only).
Troubleshoot fiber faults, attenuation issues, connectivity failures, and damaged cores.
Ensure proper cable management, tray routing, earthing, and compliance with telecom and electrical safety requirements.
Coordinate with project engineers during installation, testing, and commissioning.
Work in coordination with HSE officers and comply with site safety requirements.
Maintain high standards of housekeeping and site discipline within the work environments.
Requirements
Technical & Site Competency
Hands-on experience in fiber splicing and OTDR trace interpretation.
Familiarity with optical connectors (LC, SC, ST, etc.) and patch cord management.
Ability to read fiber route drawings, cable schedules, and basic layout drawings.
Experience working in telecom rooms, substations, or infrastructure sites is an advantage.
Basic understanding of working in live environments with attention to safety and discipline.
Familiarity with utility access procedures, site induction processes, and working within regulated substation environments.
Ability to comply with client-mandated competency assessments and documentation requirements prior to site deployment.
Ability to follow PTW procedures and comply with HSE guidance provided by site HSE officers.
Qualifications
ITI / Diploma in Telecom, Electrical, Electronics, or equivalent technical field.
Experience working on TAQA, TRANSCO, or similar UAE utility transmission projects is preferred.
Fiber splicing certification is preferred.
UAE driving license is an advantage.
Experience
2+ years of hands-on experience in fiber optic installation, splicing, and testing.
Experience in telecom, utility, or infrastructure projects is an advantage.
Capable of independently handling installation and testing tasks under engineer supervision.
