Position Overview
We are seeking a highly competent and hands-on Electrical Engineer with strong experience in utility and substation environments. The candidate will lead and manage site teams involved in installation, testing, migration, and maintenance of DC power systems including battery chargers, battery banks, DC distribution boards, and associated equipment.
The ideal candidate must demonstrate technical leadership, strong documentation capability (MoS preparation), and a strict HSE-first approach in live substation environments.
Key Responsibilities
1. Technical & Engineering Responsibilities
Lead installation, testing, and commissioning of:
Battery Chargers and Rectifiers
DC Systems (48V / 110V / 220V DC)
DCDB (DC Distribution Boards)
MCCCs and associated panels
VCU (Voltage Control Units)
Transformer-fed rectifier systems
Supercapacitor-based backup systems
Handle installation and maintenance of battery technologies:
VRLA batteries
Ni-Cad batteries
Lead Acid batteries
Conduct load calculations and power cable sizing for DC systems.
Perform redundancy assessment and design validation (N+1 / dual redundancy systems).
Review and validate engineering drawings, SLDs, GA drawings, and vendor documents.
Prepare and review Method of Statements (MoS), ITPs, and risk assessments.
Plan and execute migration of existing DC loads during brownfield upgrade projects.
Supervise rectifier replacement, DC system upgrades, and system cutovers.
Conduct troubleshooting, fault diagnosis, and preventive maintenance on DC systems.
Ensure proper battery storage, handling, and lifecycle management.
Ensure compliance with OEM guidelines and utility standards.
2. Site Supervision & Execution
Supervise and manage site installation teams.
Coordinate with clients, consultants, and OEMs during site activities.
Oversee cable laying, termination, glanding, and testing.
Ensure proper installation of battery racks, DC panels, chargers, and interconnections.
Monitor work quality, timelines, and compliance with project specifications.
Ensure safe execution of live system migration works.
Lead FAT, SAT, and pre-SAT inspections where applicable.
3. Health, Safety & Compliance
Enforce strict HSE compliance in substation environments.
Prepare and implement HSE plans and toolbox talks.
Ensure compliance with HSD (Health & Safety Directives) and utility regulations.
Conduct risk assessments for battery handling and DC system cutovers.
Ensure proper handling of hazardous materials (electrolytes, acid, Ni-Cad cells).
Maintain safe working practices during energized work and load migration.
4. Documentation & Coordination
Prepare detailed Method of Statements (MoS) for DC migration works.
Review design documents and submit technical clarifications.
Coordinate with engineering teams for document revisions.
Maintain daily progress reports and site activity logs.
Participate in design review meetings and technical workshops.
Requirements
Experience
Minimum 5–8 years of relevant experience in electrical engineering within utility, transmission, or substation environments.
Proven hands-on experience in:
Battery chargers and DC power systems
Battery banks (VRLA, Ni-Cad, Lead Acid)
DCDB, MCC panels, rectifiers
Load migration in live substations
Redundant DC power systems
Experience in brownfield DC system upgrades is highly preferred.
Prior experience working with TAQA Transmission / TRANSCO projects is an added advantage.
TAQA Competency Certification in similar scope of work is an added advantage.
